BEHAVIOUR CONSULTATIONS

When you request a behaviour consultation from us you will get a professional, caring service that is tailored around the needs of you and your animal.

We offer a bespoke service and the only way to do that is by listening to you. We will talk through your worries and concerns then formulate a plan that takes into account your personal lifestyle. The way to be successful is to create a bespoke plan that is designed for you, with your involvement, that you know is achievable.

​We work with all species/breeds of animal however the most popular enquiries that we are called out to are feline, equine and canine.
​We try to carry out a consultation in the convenience of your home (or stables/livery yard). The reason for this is we get a lot more benefit from seeing an animal in its normal home environment and it also stops the animal suffering from possible increased anxiety of travelling, new people, new surrounding etc...

​Sometimes the only option is for the animal to come to us and we have a therapy room to accommodate these moments.

FELINE

A feline consultation

​Our feline consultations predominantly mean a session of applied feline-pharmacognosy because (in our experience) 95% of behaviour issues with a cat are health related. 
Cats encounter physical and emotional health related problems, that effect their behaviour. Applying feline-pharmacognosy as a form of treatment allows your cat to show us what they need to help themselves. This way we know that the method of working is relevant, the cat chose it.
The behaviour your cat is showing could be from a physical issue, a change of circumstances (creating emotional trauma) an imbalance in the body, a deficiency or a degradation of health due to illness or a traumatic experience that has now psychologically traumatised him/her.
In our experience zoopharmacognosy is the single best way of treating behaviour issues within cats. 
A feline consultation will take, on average, 2 1/2 hours.

EQUINE

An equine consultation

​Our equine consultations are broken down into two categories.
  • ​A half day consult
  • A full day consult​​
​After an initial discussion ​​with you to determine the areas of concern we will agree whether it would be more beneficial for you to book in for a full day or a half day. Our clients tend to favour a half day consult.
Again, the consultation will be at your horses stables or place of residence. When working with an equine behaviour issue you are an integral part of the consultation, therefore it will maximise the results by seeing you both in the stable/paddock environment.
Initially, the consultation will cover a re-cap of areas discussed (this is a very important part of the consultation) then we look into the causes of the behaviour (not the reasons*). We educate you to understand why the behaviour is happening and that enables us to be able to work with you so you become capable of effecting/changing the behaviour.
* a reason is what we call a trigger, the cause is what's happening behind the scenes to stimulate the trigger.

Working with behaviour means adapting your methods. This allows you to assess what you are doing and what your horse is experiencing in relation to what is creating the behaviour.

​So often we come across situations where the owner is trying very hard to work with their horse and all it takes to get beyond the behaviour block is an understanding of why it is happening and how to change, so the behaviour goes away.

Equine-pharmacognosy allows your horse to heal themselves.

​This is the perfect solution when the behaviour problem is connected to a physical issue.
Equine-pharmacognosy is designed to work alongside our vets. We do, at times, witness our horses highlight conditions that  may need veterinary care and we would advise appropriately.
If, after your initial evaluation, you book for a half day consultation then you will be working with either adapting your methods (this allows us to assess what you are doing and what your horse is experiencing in relation to what is creating the behaviour and putting you on the right path to improvement) or allowing your horse to heal themselves via zoopharmacognosy (they are in complete control of what they use to heal themselves). 

If you are booked for a full day consult you get a complete, bespoke behaviour consult that not only sets you up on the right path but you will have started to practice this. We work with you until we are confident you know what you are doing.

CANINE​

A canine consultation

Your canine consultation will take place in your own home* at your convenience. We carry out these consultations throughout the working week, evenings and weekends. 
As with all our consultations, they start off with an assessment. We then highlight the areas of concern, prioritise them and formulate your personal behaviour plan. Every situation, dog and family are different so every plan is unique.
Once we have highlighted your principle areas we will look at various possible methods of application. We may have to create a management plan to remove any serious issues instantly whilst we overcome the causes for concern. We may look at food, health, exercise, family (2 and 4 legged) and routines.
After management has been set up (if needed) and everyone is safe, we will agree upon a teaching plan so you can start progressing forward in capable, achievable stages. We will teach you how to create consistent boundaries for your dog to live within. This creates a safe environment for your dog that is not based on rigid control measures.
* we have a therapy room as an alternative location if needed.

If your concern is based around your walks then we will be focusing on that practical element, however, sometimes it is necessary to take a slight step back and evaluate the whole picture.

​Very rarely do we find that the problems with dogs walking is simply the walk. There are numerous reasons why a dog may be pulling, lunging or showing aggression. We never assume anything and all avenues are looked at and explored.
Everything we do is based around understanding the dog. We look at the issue from the dogs point of view, we explain to you what your dog is saying and we work with methods that dogs naturally know and do.

​We educate you to understand what that message is and how to react to it. Our aim is to make you confident that you know what your dog needs and how to give it.
If we find, during our evaluation, that your dogs behaviour may be partly due to a health issue (95% of aggression behaviour has pain connected to it) we will discuss the option of using canine-pharmacognosy as part of the consult.


​                     We have worked with many dogs where locating and removing the pain problem returns the behaviour to normal.
